Community

We collaborate as a network of small businesses, farms, vineyards, orchards, and associated businesses. Our intent is to support, encourage, learn, mentor, and collaborate to grow opportunities and healthy food.

When we talk to food banks and pantries about what vegetables are requested, they look at us like we’re crazy. They respond that they need quantity, and quality is appreciated. We are increasing access to donated produce with a mobile farm stand (named Poppy) that delivers on weekends when the banks, food pantries, and senior meal groups we support are closed. Alongside Poppy, we offer healthy cooking demonstrations and a kids’ craft area for making simple projects. English and Spanish speakers will be on site.

Over 1/3 of the nation’s vegetables and 3/4 of fruits and nuts are grown in CA (https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/Statistics/). As of 4/2025, the average hourly pay for a farmworker in CA is $17.23–$17.63/hour (Bureau of Labor Statistics). CA produces 400 specialty crops in our region, feeds the world, and farmworkers earn a minimum wage.

CA domestic and service workers are mostly women. Many Latinx and immigrant women are employed informally, leading to undercounting in official statistics and increased vulnerability (Labor.UCLA.edu).

CA has a high rate of unsheltered homeless veterans: 67% compared to 38% nationally (CaliforniaVeterans.org).

In Jun and Nov, Poppy distributes weekly; Jul – Oct is 2-3x per week. Weekend events run late Jun through mid-Nov.
Jun, Nov = 8 deliveries @ 3 locations = 24 sites
Jul – Oct = 16 deliveries @ 4 locations = 64 sites
Total: 88 distributions, averaging 50 people = 4,400+- people.
