Pollinators

We are a pollinator friendly small farm. The attached Pollinator Plan details some of our current and future efforts.

Pollinator hedgerows and islands are incorporated in several locations and we are consistently adding. Pollinator cover crops, companion planting in the orchard and among row crops offer additional support.

We are incorporating pollinator plant experiments and offering pollinator-related workshops to advocate for pollinators for all sized farms and gardens.

In 2024 we were pest paradise. We think it’s because the area around the row crops was bare. In 2025:

  • Thanks to RCD we planted a pollinator hedgerow outside the front fence and down the north side of the hills.
  • We planted three pollinator islands around the row crops and across the bottom terrace of the orchard.
  • In the row crop beds we alternated nasturtium, marigold, and alyssum with the vegetables.
  • We agreed with Xerces to not use any Neem due to bees. In 2024 we sprayed Neem once in a portion of the garden. No more.
  • Near the house, we have many pollinators that attracted bees year round.
  • We began a CA native habitat on the north hillside that is too steep for crops or orchard. On the slope we planted pollinators and 24 elder trees.

We are committed to finding a balance with no organic or conventional additives and producing great fruit and veg. No easy task.

We are available to offer ideas and open for any of your own successes. Thanks, Kelly
